W. Arthur Porter, Ph.D

Dr. Porter is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Oklahoma, and recently served as Associate Dean, College of Natural Science, at The University of Texas at Austin, Research Professor; Acting Director and Department Chair of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, 2011–2012.

Prior to his retirement from the University of Oklahoma, he served as University Professor and Regents Chair of Engineering at that university. From 1998–2006, he served as University Vice President for Technology Development, and also as Dean of the College of Engineering from 1998–2005. Previously, from 1985–1998, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Houston Advanced Research Center, a nonprofit research consortium. He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Rice University for more than five years prior to his appointment with the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Porter previously served as a director of Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (ESI) in Portland, Oregon, and Bookham Technology (now Oclaro, Inc.) in San Jose, California. At various times, he was ESI’s Chairman of the Board and also a member of its Audit, Technology and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees. He was alternately chairman and a member of Bookham’s Compensation, Audit and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees.

Dr. Porter co-chaired Texas Gov. George W. Bush's Texas Science and Technology Council, and is a corresponding member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. He earned his bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in physics from the University of North Texas, and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary engineering from Texas A&M University. He has been a Stewart Director since 1993.
