Community of Sharing
“When a lot across the street from my personal residence was purchased, I was naturally curious. So, being in the title business, I immediately looked it up in the land records and discovered Community of Sharing’s charity partner, Homes for Our Troops, purchased the land. There were plans to build a specially adapted home on the lot for Marine Lance Corporal Nicholas Thom, who was severely injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Afghanistan.
My family and neighbors decided to attend the ground breaking to welcome Nicholas, his wife Samantha as well as another beneficiary of a home from Homes for Our Troops, Lance Corporal Michael Martinez of Purcellville, Virginia. Words can’t describe the emotions I felt not only as a fellow American but also as a mother when I saw Nicholas and Michael, on their prosthetic legs, say the Pledge of Allegiance.
During construction, Nicholas had several surgeries that kept him from seeing development on his new home, but I was able to share pictures. In addition, my family and I chose to switch our annual Memorial Day weekend party into a fundraiser to support Homes for Our Troops and specifically for the home being built for Nick. We raised over $6,000!
Best of all, I realized the home was complete in a unique way – there was an American flag flying from the flagpole right in front of the house.
I am truly thankful Stewart supports a charity like Homes for Our Troops that is helping so many of our wounded veterans. And my family and I are happy to have been a small part of their nationwide program.
Seeing that American flag flying at Nicholas and Samantha’s house every morning as I leave for work helps me remember what a wonderful country we live in and the young men and women who help keep it that way.”
