Stewart general counsel Smith named to Texas Real Estate Broker-Lawyer Committee

HOUSTON (Nov. 28, 2007) – E. Ashley Smith, executive vice president and general counsel for Stewart Information Services Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiaries, Stewart Title Guaranty Co. and Stewart Title Co., has been named by the State Bar of Texas to the Texas Real Estate Broker-Lawyer Committee.

An advisory committee of the Texas Real Estate Commission, the Broker-Lawyer Committee’s goal is to protect the interests of parties to a real estate transaction while reducing problems and delays. The committee drafts and revises forms and contracts to be used by real estate licensees.

Smith came to Stewart in January 2006, having served for three years as vice chancellor for governmental relations and policy for The University of Texas System. He has 35 years experience in corporate governance, administrative law, governmental affairs and real estate, and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from Harris County for 14 years.

A licensed attorney in the state of Texas, Smith also holds a Texas real estate broker’s license. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from The University of Texas at Austin and in addition to his J.D. from The University of Texas, he holds a master of laws degree in international and environmental law from the University of Houston.
