From a four-bay fire station to retail space and 64 residences, The Station at Potomac Yard is a multi-use, innovative structure designed to meet multiple community needs. Alexandria city staff, members of the community and its elected leadership acknowledged the need for low-income rental housing and worked with developer, Potomac Yard Development, LLC (PYD) to achieve affordable housing in a state-of-the-art facility. PYD donated the projected site and also provided more than $14 million for the project. With easy access to public transportation, The Station’s location is ideal for members of Alexandria’s workforce.

More than two-thirds of the approximately 700 to 1,300-square-foot residential units will be reserved for tenants with incomes at or below 60 percent of the Washington metro region’s median income. Amenities in the four-level residential structure include a community room, a fitness room, rooftop terrace and underground parking.

As one of the leaders in Smart Growth design, The Station at Potomac Yard embraces sustainability in construction and livability. The practical combination of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified fire station and energy-efficient apartments has earned the project several awards and nominations for its devotion to meeting the residential needs of lower-income families in an area of much-desired real estate.
