John L. Killea
Chief Legal Officer
With more than 34 years of legal experience, Killea began his Stewart career in 2000 as counsel in the claims and agency underwriting areas for Stewart Title Insurance Company, Stewart’s New York underwriter. Later, he served as chief claims counsel for Stewart Title Insurance Company and currently serves as its chairman.
In 2008 Killea became general counsel of Stewart Title Guaranty Company, and in April 2012 he was appointed chief legal officer of Stewart Information Services Corporation. In these roles, he oversees the underwriting, claims, litigation and compliance areas of all Stewart entities. He serves on the company’s executive team and is a member of the executive committee of Stewart Title Guaranty Company and Stewart Title Company. Killea is also a member of the board of directors of Stewart Title Guaranty Company, Stewart Title insurance Company and Stewart Title Limited, Stewart’s international underwriter.
Killea has been active in advising on corporate governance; underwriting high-liability multi-state, multi-site commercial transactions, including renewable energy projects and large scale development projects; overseeing Stewart’s Market Conduct Examination team, interfacing with various state departments of insurance; coordinating complex litigation strategy affecting Stewart nationwide and internationally; and overseeing Stewart’s Claims Management team in developing strategy for its most demanding claims both within and outside the U.S.
Killea is a frequent lecturer on the subjects of fraud prevention, compliance and mitigating both litigation and claims risks.
He holds a B.A., cum laude, from Lafayette College and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and has been admitted to practice in the state of New York, as well as United States District Court for both the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
