Free Home-Buying Classes offered in Dallas through 2005

HOUSTON (Oct. 20, 2005) - Stewart Title, a Texas-based real estate information and title insurance company, and the League of Latin American Citizens National Housing Commission (LNHC), have formed a strategic alliance to pave the way for more Hispanic families to achieve the American dream of homeownership.

Free classes are offered by the LULAC National Housing Commission to promote Latino homeownership through education, counseling and grassroots programs designed to simplify the home buying process. Classes are offered in a bilingual format and cover many topics, including credit scores, evaluating loan offers, selecting a real estate agent, home inspections, title insurance and property taxes. Seminars are being held in Houston, El Paso, Dallas, San Antonio, Texas, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Chicago, Miami, Boston, and Santa Maria, Calif., through early 2006.

"LULAC National Housing Commission's responsibilities are enormous. This has resulted in over $5 million in mortgages over the past 3 months" said LNHC National Chairman Beatrice Alba Martinez. "We are promoting affordable housing, economic development and job opportunities for the rapidly growing Latino community. Corporate partners, like Stewart Title, allow us to develop creative solutions to expand homeownership opportunities and help families build better lives," she added.

Formed in 1929, LULAC is the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States. It has grown to a membership of 150,000 who actively advocate the civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs. It is projected that by 2030, Hispanics may comprise 48 percent of the Dallas area's population; Hispanics currently account for almost 60 percent of San Antonio's population.

Stewart Title is one of nine corporations working with LNHC on this pioneering program. Vice President Jose Menendez of Stewart Title is serving as the chairman for the corporate partners program and hopes this alliance will increase equity in the housing market. "Through this partnership, we expand our commitment to help more Latinos enjoy the benefits of homeownership," he said.
