Located on approximately 11 acres, Victory Gardens is a 74-unit mixed-income permanent supportive and affordable rental housing development on the campus of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – CT Healthcare Center in Newington, Connecticut.
One of the first of its kind, Victory Gardens is the result of a new VA program seeking to build housing on surplus property for homeless veterans and those at risk of becoming homeless. The apartments consist of 40 one-bedroom units, 22 two-bedroom units and 12 three-bedroom units. Thirty-seven of the 74 units that are dedicated to homeless veterans and their families are fully furnished and come equipped with dishes, silverware, pots, pans, and cleaning materials.
Built by the Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development, a regional non-profit, Victory Gardens is well positioned to serve as a comprehensive solution for the myriad housing and other issues veterans often face when returning home from service. In addition, the apartments are adjacent to VA medical facilities, giving veterans convenient access to quality healthcare, programs and other services.
