States Where Coronavirus Is Growing the Most and Least Week Ending May 25 2020

Controlling the spread of Coronavirus will continue to impact both the health and economic aspects of life. The growth rate (or decline) of the Coronavirus infection rate varies significantly across the country. Once again, the TINSTAANREM axiom is invoked — There Is No Such Thing As A National Real Estate Market or Economy. The same is true regarding the ebb and flow of infection rates during the latest pandemic.

To identify where Coronavirus is growing (or contracting) the most, 24/7 Wall Street analyzed state data across several key Coronavirus metrics, including:

  • Average daily new cases per 100,000 people (May 18–25)
  • Coronavirus-related deaths per 100,000 people (May 18–25)
  • Confirmed cases per 100,000 people (total)
  • Completed Coronavirus tests per 100,000 people
  • Population density (per square mile)
  • Date of first confirmed case

The following table shows the 10 states with the most and least average number of new cases daily from May 18th to May 25th, based on new cases per 100,000 people. This provides an apples-to-apples comparison between states with differing populations.

States With Most and Least Average Daily Coronavirus Cases

The next tables show the 10 states with the most and fewest confirmed cases of Coronavirus per 100,000 people. While several more densely populated states appear in the top list, also included is North Dakota, which has just 11 people per square mile—sharing the fourth least-dense ranking with neighboring South Dakota. In comparison, while North Dakota saw 2,457 confirmed Coronavirus cases per 100,000 people, South Dakota recorded just one-fifth that number at 520. That makes the level of Coronavirus incidence in South Dakota 0.52 percent compared to 2.46 percent in North Dakota.

Just one state in the ranking of the fewest confirmed cases per 100,000 people has a density above 100 people per square mile — Hawaii. Like Alaska, Hawaii is more access-restricted. The Hawaiian Islands have maintained a mandatory 14-day quarantine period for all arrivals since March 26, 2020. Arrivals must stay in quarantine at home or in a hotel, with some exceptions for those arriving by boat who have been at sea for at least two weeks.

States With Most and Fewest Confirmed Coronavirus Cases

The states with the most and fewest number of deaths per 100,000 people in seven days from May 18th to 25th are shown in the following tables.

States With Most and Fewest Coronavirus Deaths

Metrics for all 50 states are shown in the final table below.

Still Unknown Regarding the Coronavirus:

  • Will there be a second wave?
  • Are those who have already had the virus immune to reinfection?
  • Will a viable vaccine be available — and if so, when and how effective?
  • Will the Coronavirus mutate (akin to the common cold), negating the potential of a vaccine?

As I wrote in the Stewart Blog this week:

“This Coronavirus-driven recession will not be over until we can sit on a crowded airplane, walk into a packed elevator, or attend a popular sporting event without concern.”

I believe that the longer it takes for the economy to fully rev up, the smaller it will ultimately be, as permanent business closures and bankruptcies continue to grow.
